The key to any student's success lies within a safe, supportive and most importantly inclusive learning environment. Below is a visual of four key elements that I focus on in my classroom.
Language Students learn to be aware of the words they use and the effects they have on other people surrounding them. We practice giving constructive feedback, collaborating and opening our minds to different opinions and ideas on a daily basis. My classroom is a space of respectful language and behaviour. Comfort Students are invited to help shape the classroom. We all contribute actively to turning a basic layout of tables, chairs and computers into a zone of comfort and safety. Some students might need a fidget toy, others love to have a pillow. I would like to invite everyone to be comfy and productive at the same time! Circles Talking circles are a tool I use to work on communication and inter-personal skills. They are in accordance with the first nations' principles of learning and offer a way to connect on a deeper level. In a circle we are all equal despite all of our differences. My classroom is a two way street with my role being a facilitator rather than "the expert". We build relationships through conversations, discussions and many questions that need to be asked and answered.
